Cultural Heritage Management Plans and Agreements

In accordance with the Queensland Cultural Heritage Act 2003, Archaeology Survey Team Pty Ltd. collaborate with the specific Indigenous group/s and project proponent to develop Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMPs) and Cultural Heritage Management Agreements (CHMAs). These plans and agreements ensure the protection of cultural heritage assets and enable projects to implement strategies that mitigate risk effectively protecting both cultural heritage and the proponent. This is a small portion of Kaba Kada, that was well lived in right up to early colinisation, with artefacts from cultural modified trees, nut cracking rocks and grinding stones all still where they were left when last used.

Archaeology Survey Cape Tribulation

Out on Survey Cape York

A campfire and swag for the night before the next days survey. Archaeology Survey Team Pty Ltd. often work remote and accommodation can be hard to find, we dont mind we consider ourselves very fortunate to be out on country with the Traditional Owners often a long way from home.

Open Air Excavation Thailand

Pottery and shards left in situ, archaeology involves the scientific study of human history and prehistory through site surveys, excavation and analysis of artifacts, structures, and other physical remains. Archaeologists utilise a range of techniques and methodologies to uncover and interpret the material culture and social practices of past societies, providing valuable insights into the development and evolution of human civilisation. Drone Mapping

Mapping the Terrain below for high and low points that we will focus our ground surveys efforts. the quality of information and photography of today that drones provide is considerably higher. In the past and before drones, it was very difficult to map from above. Past aerial photography was conducted with ladders, hot air balloons and even kites. The use of Drones by Archaeology Survey Team Pty Ltd. licensed drone pilots increases the knowledge of the area through careful mapping,

Culturally Modified Tree

Culturally Modified Trees are common in the Far North, however this one is not an Indigenous modification however Chinese. Archaeology Survey Team Pty Ltd. discovered this while on survey and this demonstrates that other cultures used living trees by modifying them. The Chinese used coastal locations to move inland to mine the goldfields, this one leaves us an important message, this is possibly a Chinese burial.

Newell Beach Boat Ramp Upgrade

TMR/RoadTek upgraded of Newell Beach Boat ramp. Initially the boat ramp had a jetty and the new Ramp did not include this. Archaeology Survey Team Pty Ltd. knew how important the previous jetty was to the elderly who only had limited fishing spaces throughout the Douglas Shire. We strongly recommended to TMR that this be rebuilt. TMR listened and now the Elderly have their fishing space back again, and we have an amazing boat ramp, Well done TMR/Roadtek.

Walu Wagirriga

Alexandra Range Lookout (Walu Wugirriga), this is one of Archaeology Survey Team Pty Ltd. favorite stops along the coast road to Wuajl Wujal, its an impressive view of the East Coast from Cape Kimberly to Cairns. We enjoy this stop every time, it does not get old.

Do I need to undertake a Cultural Heritage Risk Assessment?

It depends on the specifics of each project. Archaeology Survey Team Pty Ltd. recommend engaging early with the Indigenous group or entity responsible for the project area to ensure cultural sensitivity and compliance. If the land is significantly disturbed, you may still need environmental or other approvals. Ensure that you have obtained approval from the relevant authorities and completed any necessary online assessments or permits (check with Local Government). As the project owner or manager, you are responsible for obtaining these approvals.

Once all necessary approvals and permits are in place, you can proceed with your project under the guidance of the Traditional Owner Body (its important to document this). Make sure to discuss cultural heritage at every toolbox meeting, perform regular land walkovers, and document any findings. If you discover anything of cultural significance, you must notify the Traditional Owners, and we can assist with this process. Implement and review your ‘New Find’ Procedure regularly.

Before construction starts, conduct a site-specific Cultural Heritage Induction for key staff and contractors, explaining their responsibilities under the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 (ACHA 2003) and the Queensland Heritage Act 1992. Follow Section 28 of the ACHA 2003 for high-impact ground disturbances, and use the ‘Find – Stop – Notify – Manage’ Procedure if potential cultural heritage is discovered.

If there is known cultural heritage in the area, conduct an assessment regardless and consider that you may be required to develop a Cultural Heritage Management Agreement or Plan. Employ Cultural Heritage Monitors for any earth-disturbing activities where there is any potential to uncover cultural evidence. Treat Cultural Heritage Assessments like an Environmental Impact Assessments, performing them during the planning stages to ensure due diligence and compliance with the Queensland Cultural Heritage Act 2003.

Neglecting to plan for Cultural Heritage management can lead to significant project delays.
